I shaved… for now!

What is so intriguing about men’s facial hair? Why do people take such an interest in it?

I wish I knew. Regardless, it’s got me doing something silly for the next four weeks throughout November, or should I say… Movember?

That’s right. I’ve teamed up with a few of my friends from the Dancing With The Stars group to support Movember. Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the mustache, highlighting men’s health issues – specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. (So, this goes out to all my Aussies!) The guys behind it joked about 80s fashion and decided it was time to bring the mustache back.  In order to justify their Mos (Australian slang for mustache), they used their new looks to raise money for prostate cancer research… never dreaming that facial hair would ultimately lead to a global movement that would get men talking about a taboo subject – their health. Well, looky here… I’m half way across the globe, and will sport my Mo, but I’ll need your help. I’ll explain later.

A Mo Bro starts Movember – the month formerly known as November – clean shaven, and grows a mustache all month long, garnering support from friends and family in the form of donations.  What’s more, a Mo Bro is a walking billboard for the cause as his new look opens the door for him to talk about cancers affecting men – making the mustache a symbol, much like the pink ribbon is for breast cancer.  Each Movember culminates in a Gala Partè in major cities around the globe where Mo Bros dress up to match their Mo, channeling the likes of Tom Selleck, Ghandi and Ron Burgandy, vying for the ultimate accolade:  Man of Movember.

While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (women who support their guys) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés.

So, here’s where I need your help. I’ve developed my MoSpace page (a Web page that will keep you updated) where donations can be made, as well as suggestions. Suggestions? Yes, suggestion on what I should shave into my beard. You see, I’m not quite sure what type of mustache I should be sporting. I’ve decided to leave that up to you. I’ll grow the beard, you design the art. The suggestion with the most comments win, and I’ll post the photo at the end of the month.

Check out my MoSpace page; all ready posted my first pick. I’ll keep it updated.

What to do with Provo chicks

Mormon culture never ceases to amaze me. And nowhere in the world is there a more defined Mormon “bubble” than Provo, Utah.

Between teenagers coming up with crazy, creative ways of asking a girl out to a high school dance and provident living food storage, there is bound to come a point when the two collide; little did I know I’d be living in it.

Straight from Provo — Chicken Coop Communities! Yes, the people of Provo now have the right to raise chickens. Really? I never knew it was illegal to begin with. But, in classic Provo fashion, where you need a permit to sneeze in public, P-town requires a permit to own chickens.

Well, it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. A few weeks ago, my nearly youngest brother wanted to be creative and ask a girl out for a high school dance date. Since his older brothers (myself included) have all experienced high school dating in Utah, we put on our thinking caps to recall the various, ridiculous ways we asked out girls when we were teenagers.

Our imaginative minds concocted a simple, yet original, scheme. We hollowed out a chicken’s egg and inserting a note saying, “Will you go to the high school dance with me?”

Picture this. Since it was near Easter, we procured a basket filled with plastic grass clippings, decorated with jelly beans and candy; the crowning piece — our hollowed egg! We delivered the package to her doorstep with a note that read, “Crack me up, this is no ‘yoke’!”

The next week a similar package arrived at my parents’ home: It was a gift-wrapped box. The peculiar thing about this box was the repetitive chirping noise emanating from a small hole. Within the box was a little chick, which couldn’t be more than a couple of weeks old. In the best form of a true antithetic response, this young girl replies to my brother with a chick bearing a “yes” sign. Very clever.

Now, three weeks later, what is my brother supposed to do with this chick? (Don’t worry; he’s kept good care for it, so far.) He can’t keep it. Or, can he?

Well, according to a new Provo city ordinance he can. However, I’m not so sure the neighbors will appreciate this chick’s relentless, high-pitched chirping.

Though Provo City Council recently passed an ordinance allowing homeowners to raise chickens on properties, I understand this controversy is ruffling feathers on both sides of the fence.

Mormon culture is one of provident living, or at least it’s something we are taught. Owning your own chickens is a grade-A “eggs”ample of provident living. Add a garden to your backyard and that’s truly living off the land.

Apparently, there are a number of Provo families who have chicken coops. In fact, most are unknown in our community. I even knew of someone who owned chickens on their property for the past 10 years. (Note to Provo city officials: The family has since removed the coop and no longer raises chickens. Additionally, no one ever complained about smell or noise. So, don’t go looking for their permit.)

Since “Lloyd” moved in (Yes, we named the chick Lloyd), our family toyed with the idea of having a free-range chicken roaming our property. I mean, who wouldn’t want to have fresh eggs in the morning? (Oh yeah, the vegans.)

However, Lloyd is getting bigger and my mother isn’t too keen on the idea of more pets around the house. I guess that’s what she gets for having boys. Anyone in Provo want a chicken?

What’s up with the music player?

Filed under: Music — Tags: — donosmond @ 11:53 am

So, by now some of you may have noticed the music player at the bottom of my blog, and are probably wondering why that’s there. Well, it may come to you by no surprise that I happen to enjoy music — must be in the blood. :) And it got me thinking… (Dangerous, I know!)

I frequent a few blogs from time to time, and for the most part I enjoy looking through some peoples’ play list they have posted on their blogs. On more than one occasion, I’ve actually gone to Amazon.com and purchased the music after taking a listen. That’s probably why I have more than 15,000 songs on my iPod.

Anyway, I decided to add this on my blog as a way to share some of the music I’m finding online. I’ll warn you, this list may get pretty eclectic. For those of you on my Facebook page, you know the range of music I listen to. I would say “I’m a little bit country, and I’m a little bit rock and roll” with everything in between.

As a side note, I will be making more changes to my blog in the near future. I’m looking for a new countdown clock for bobsledding again. I know this blog is in need of a serious revamp, so I’ll get to it.

Thanks again for visiting. See you soon.

Peace!

Top of the list

A couple months ago I left the Blackberry world and purchased the G1. I never thought I would see the day when I would leave Blackberry; that phone was my brain! If I ever misplaced it, I was lost.

Well, I have a new love now. The G1.

Think iPhone, but better.

I just downloaded a new application for my phone the other day called Phonalyzr. It graphs your phone usage and lets you know who you are calling the most and the time you spend on your phone. (I’m not going to divulge the specifics… it’s a little embarrassing.)

But, I did wanna share one thing I found out… I’m a momma’s boy.

Yep, my mother is the one I call the most.

Pump It Up…

I was at the gym this morning, which got me thinking…

Why is it that guys have to walk around with their arms outstretched like a monkey?

Typically, girls bundle up and are greatly affected by the weather; guys, not so much. So, why do guys wear sweatshirts in the gym, while girls… well, not much?

Just a couple thoughts I had going through my mind at the gym.

…such a funny place.

Testing the Magic of the World Wide Web

Ok, so I want to try something out…

A couple weeks ago my team and I were forerunners for World Cup. Unfortunately, we crashed. What’s more, we never got any pictures or video of the crash.

So, I want to see if we can find video/photo footage of our team’s crash during World Cup. I know there’s video or photos somewhere, because when we got out of the sled there were at least 20 people there taking pictures.

This will test the “six degrees of separation” theory and social networking on the Internet.

Here are the details I can provided:

Where: Utah Olympic Park near Park City, UT
When: Friday, February 13, 2008 at about 2:00 pm MDT
Who: Team Holm Bobsled (Forerunners)

If you know anyone that has photos or video, tweet me: Don_Osmond.

Let’s see what we can find out. This could get interesting.

I’m trying to find a tool to add Twitter to my blog.

Anyone know of a good one to use?
