Don Osmond: In my opinion…

Caesar’s Bellagio Fountains

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — Tags: — donosmond @ 10:14 pm

A crash of my father’s computer sent me to the Apple store this evening. The quickest location to run to is across the street from the Flamingo: Caesar’s Palace.

Running through the Forum Shops, I arrived with laptop in hand.

(I’ve gotta hand it to the staff there. Even without a reservation, that got me in pretty quickly. Thanks be to the Genius Bar!)

I was hoping for a quick resolution to our crash; however, as with any computer problem, it was going to take a few hours.

(Sorry for bailing on you this evening, Noelle. Now you know what happened.)

Anyway, while chilling at the Apple store, people started noticing a puddle forming in the middle of the store. It wasn’t anything big, but that quickly changed.

This minor drip-drop began its spouting; threatening some of the computer displays.

Pretty soon there was a mediocre curtain of water falling in the middle of the store.

Most of the staff dropped everything they were doing to take care of the miniature deluge.

I’m sure this frustrated the manager, but it made for a little entertainment while I waited for the computer issue to be resolved.

The entire ordeal lasted for about 30 – 45 min. Just thought I’d share.

By the way, I’m still here. And, we’re still working on the computer. It’s been about 2.5 hours. And, I think it’s going to be a little while longer.

Blogger’s note: I don’t want to hear one thing from a PC user, jesting about a MAC crash. It was user error… umm… just don’t tell my father I said so. :)

Jean Surgery

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — Tags: — donosmond @ 11:24 pm

Seven years ago, I purchased a pair of jeans. Nothing fancy, just classy.

The faded look has allowed me to keep these jeans for so long, but after pulling them out of the laundry yesterday, it could have been the dying day for “ol’ blue.”

Literally falling apart at the seams, had I not have a sewing kit nearby, they would have been left in the bin.

Leaning upon all my junior high home economics class training, I prepped the needle and thread.

For the next 15 minutes, I began the painstaking process of stitching the seam back together again. (Yes, I know how to sew: even darned socks before.)

I’m so glad my jeans came through the surgery. It would have killed me to go shopping for another pair.

Men don’t like shopping.

The Simple Successes

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — Tags: , — donosmond @ 11:12 pm

Holy Cow!!!

I’m new to this Wordpress stuff, but I’m learning. (…might be better to say that I’m willing to learn)

It’s been told me that the best way to learn something is to jump in head first and just give it a go. Well, that’s exactly what I’m doing, and simple projects are taking a lot of time to complete.

For example, I just added “Clark”– my Twitter bird. Do you have any idea how long it took me to figure out how to add him to my blog? Nearly two hours! (All the html gurus are smirking.) But, give me a break, will ya? I don’t know what .css or .php are. Still don’t!

However, I’m bound determined to figure out Wordpress html code. There will be times when I need expert help, but if things go wrong on my blog, I want to be able to fix it. I don’t have IT staff on board right now.

I wonder what I’ll learn next. In the mean time, say “hi” to Clark. :)

Oh, the simple successes we like to enjoy.

Famous by Association

I’m sitting here at the dance studio, working on my articles and a couple other projects; just killing time, really.

This is kinda becoming a regular for me; go to the studio and build shop for a minute to work. That’s the flexibility of working anywhere these days. All I really need is a computer and an internet connection.

I digress.

During the last taping of Dancing With The Stars, I was asked if I’d be willing to do a short interview for next week’s show. Apparently, they are planning on doing a short segment called “Dancing Daycare”. They are planning on filming a lot of the celebrity families as part of each dance intro.

I don’t think I’m daycare material, but if there is a cute dancer that wants to take care of me, I’m more than willing to acquiesce.

So, here I wait for…

Oh, gotta run. I’m being beckoned.

Fame, but only by association. :)

License, registration, autograph, please…

Last week’s blog got me thinking about a recent funny experience.

I was pulled over for speeding through BYU campus the other day. Seeing those blue-and-red flashing lights in the rear view mirror conjures up one of the most gut-sinking feelings on the planet.

A husky figure got out of his tailgating patrol car, and from my mirror, I watched him adjust his sunglasses as he prepped himself to deliver the standard lecture.

“License and registration, son.”

As if being pulled over is not humiliating enough, he assumed an overbearing fatherly disposition to put me in my place.

“Do you know how fast you were going?”

I sat there thinking snidely … Fast enough to get your attention.

Knowing better than to mouth off, I politely responded, “It was a little too fast. I apologize, officer.”

After gathering my effects, he moseyed back to his squad car, still flashing lights in a blaze of glory. The victor was waving his banner for all to see as he basked in the grandeur of his afternoon kill.

Five minutes later, the conversation became interesting.

He loomed over the driver’s side window and asked, “Are you related to THE Osmonds?”

Hmmm, do I lie and get this over with, or …

“Yes, I am.”

“Really? Can you get me an autographed picture of Marie?”

I considered this an opportunity to barter my way out of getting a ticket, but knew the officer wouldn’t budge.

He kept me there for a solid 15 minutes where I answered trivial questions about purple socks, white teeth and puppy love.

That afternoon, we both left the side of the road disappointed; me with my ticket, the officer without an autograph.

He wasn’t seriously thinking about scoring an autograph, was he?

Mistaken identity

There are times when we are mistaken for someone else.

If you are being compared to someone you admire, a case of mistaken identity can be viewed as a compliment. However, there are times you’re told you have a striking resemblance to Tobias from “Arrested Development.” (That’s no lie. It happened to me last week. Please tell me she was joking.)

I digress.

A few years ago, my family and I took a flight to Denver. I think my father was performing out there, but I honestly don’t remember. Regardless, it was a reason to take a family trip for the weekend.

The seven of us boarded the plane in Salt Lake City. My parents and I were seated three-across on the left, and my brothers in the neighboring seats.

As with any typical Osmond sighting, we were picking up a few audible whispered conversations.

“Psst. That’s Donny Osmond.” (Over the years, I’ve trained my ear. It’s kind of a game my brothers and I play; a misspent youth, I know.)

Anyway, we were in our seats no more than 10 minutes before a young, 20-something woman approached us. She seemed a little timid, but with a personal determination to find out the truth about this famous guy. If I were a betting man, I’d put money on the possibility her mother coaxed her into asking — the young ones usually are.

By the time she got to us, it was as though I could read her mind and knew what she was going to ask.

“Excuse me. Are you Donny Osmond?”

I knew it!

But, something was different this time. I’ve heard this question hundreds of times before. What was so odd about this one? She was looking at the wrong person — me!
I didn’t know how to respond. Befuddled with disbelief that she would question me, I responded with: “I’m sorry. I’m not.”

By now you should know the seating arrangements (this adds to the humor). My father was on the aisle, my mother in the middle, and I was near the window. The young women had, quite literally, leaned over my father to ask if I was Donny Osmond.

As I turned to my father, his facial expression seemed to say it all: “Is this girl for real?”
Before we had the chance to correct her error, she started making her way back to her seat, four rows up.

As mentioned before, the experience is either flattering, or disturbing. It all depends on whom you are compared to.

Did she really think I looked 50 years old? Ouch!

Bobsled on wheels

Filed under: Health and Fitness — Tags: , — donosmond @ 3:23 pm

Last night was the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Actually, if you want to get technical it finished at 6 a.m. this morning.

Team Holm Bobsled was invited participate by giving people rides in a bobsled — on wheels! Talk about funny looking. Brad and I fashioned a makeshift bracket for the front and back to attach six-inch wheels on the base. I was pretty impressed with Brad’s design; I was nervous it might not work.

From about 6 p.m. until midnight, yesterday, we pushed quite a few people across the park. Talk about a workout; I’m wasted!

During the event, we had the privilege of pushing both Miss Utah USA 2009 and Miss Utah Teen USA 2009 down and back. We even posed for a picture. Nice girls.

As if all that isn’t random enough, I found out that my cousin Nathan was performing there that evening. He was releasing a new CD of his. During his concert segment, he started singing a song I hadn’t heard in a long time. (Actually, very few people have ever heard it.) He sang “Baby, You’re from BYU.” It’s a parody from Lonestar’s Amazed. So, I ran up there to join in.

Nathan, me and a few other friends rewrote the words to the song back in 2002 — I think. Though a few of the words were different, and it’s been forever since I last heard it, I kinda had to fake it a little. But, I think everyone enjoyed it and had a good laugh.

Anyway, just thought I would give you an update on the event last night.

My Provo Chick and Me

Filed under: Day in the Life of..., Musing and Writing Projects — Tags: , — donosmond @ 10:05 am

My chicken article was published today in the Mormon Times, and I thought I would share a picture of the chick I referenced with all of you.

This is the chick my brother received when he asked his date for the high school dance. I have to say, this whole to-do was pretty impressive. It sure beats some of the lame ways I asked girls out in when I was a teenager.

In case you haven’t read the article yet, here’s a brief as to why I decided to write about this chicken.

Though I was born in Provo, Utah, and have a lot of great memories there, the city just seems to come up with some really stupid laws and ordinances. Truth be told, all the blame can’t rest on the city; city officials just try to cater to its residents. We all need to point the blaming finger on ourselves.

…and of course, every city has its idiosyncrasies. I’m just voicing My Opinion.

But, don’t get me started on I15 traffic, or south of BYU campus parking restrictions, or the PoPo (cops) crashing house parties. (Did I mention that house parties in Utah rarely, if ever, have alcohol?) Yeah, who knew you could have so much fun without getting drunk, and the cops still show up?

(Note: I actually attended a party at a friends house one evening. Total number of people: 10. We were heavily engrossed with a game of Settlers of Catan — a board game. We had music in the background, and… you guessed it. The cops showed up to break up the party. Apparently, we look suspicious?)

Anyway, I digress. I wanted to post the pic of the chick, and you got more than you asked for.

City Chickens

Filed under: Day in the Life of..., Musing and Writing Projects — Tags: , — donosmond @ 12:04 pm

Provo City is allowing residents the raise chickens within city limits, and it doesn’t just have to be on a farm. Not everyone is in agreement on the topic either.

In my next Mormon Times article, I share my own story with a “chick” close to home. The article will be out Monday, May 4.

Oh, the silly things that happen in Utah.

Pump It Up…

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — Tags: , — donosmond @ 4:29 pm

I was at the gym this morning, which got me thinking…

Why is it that guys have to walk around with their arms outstretched like a monkey?

Typically, girls bundle up and are greatly affected by the weather; guys, not so much. So, why do guys wear sweatshirts in the gym, while girls… well, not much?

Just a couple thoughts I had going through my mind at the gym.

…such a funny place.
