Mechanics R Us

Oh yeah… So I don’t remember if I mentioned that my brother helped me change my oil on my motorcycle, and replace my brake pads on my car earlier this month, or not. But, we were at it again with my car this morning.

During the Thanksgiving break, my car broke. Well… not the entire car; just a part on the car. It all started on my way to the bobsled track for training. I first realized I had a problem when my battery light turned on. About 15 min later, my ABS light went on… followed by the “check engine” light. Then the radio went out. Then the heater stopped working. Next my tachometer and speedometer dropped to zero. Then the dashboard lights went out. Then it was the headlights. Last to go was the engine.

You want to talk about freaky; I thought my car was possessed. I was freaking out. It’s only got about 70k on it.

I called up my brother and he said, “Let’s fix it!”

Ha ha ha. Not the type of thing I like to hear. I would much prefer taking it to the shop. But, that was not the case. My brother was rather adamant about us not taking it to the shop. (And, I so glad that we didn’t – ended up saving myself a bundle of money.)

Turns out the problem was compounded – the battery and the alternator. Replacing the battery wasn’t hard; just like switching out batteries or a flashlight (torch). The alternator was a whole other project.

I’m not going to go into all the details necessary to switch one out. (You can easily find that online.) I will say that I now know who to do the following on my car: Change tires, oil and filter, head/tail lights, batteries, alternators, and brake pads.

Geesh! I’m turning out to be my own mechanic.
