Don Osmond: In my opinion…

“I’m in a hurry… “

“…to get things done.”

I realize not everyone embraces country music; however, sometimes it is worthwhile to reflect on some decent lyrics. I’ll explain…

While coming home from work, I was channel surfing the radio and this song came on; I found it quite fitting to my situation – working, going to school, training to bobsled, dating, maintaining a level of sociality, etc.

So I decided to take the lyrics of the aforementioned song and added a brief commentary to let you in on “A Day In The Life…

Artist: Alabama
Song: I’m In A Hurry (And Don’t Know Why)

I’m in a hurry to get things done
The work I do lives and dies by deadlines (PR)
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
I get up at 6 a.m. and go to bed by 1 a.m.
All I really gotta do is live and die
That’s a little pessimistic, but true nonetheless
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why
Hence the Blackberry addiction!

Don’t know why I have to drive so fast
The fastest I’ve driven was 145 mph (in a controlled environment) :)
My car has nothing to prove
Honda Civic ‘03
It’s not new
See above…
But it’ll do zero to sixty in five point two
My car is rated 0-60 in 8.4. But “junk in the trunk” omitted, I’ve gotten it to about 6.7. However, it doesn’t matter how fast your car can go if you don’t know how to drive. I’ll have to blog about Utah drivers later. But until I do, may I suggest some fabulous reading regarding Utahn driving from an English person who moved to Utah; his/her comments nearly directly reflect mine. :)

Can’t be late, I leave in plenty of time
For those of you who know me, you know that I prefer to be early. I think it stems from a saying my high school band teacher always used to say. “To be early is to be on time; to be on time is to be late.”
Shakin’ hands with the clock
I will always try to squeeze in an extra 15 minutes for every hour.
I can’t stop
I’ll admit it; I’m addicted to efficiency.
I’m on a roll and I’m ready to rock

Oh, I hear a voice
That says I’m running behind
Better pick up my pace
It drives me crazy when others are late. Don’t they realize the importance of punctuality?
It’s a race and there ain’t no room for someone in second place
And this is why I always to be the best at everything that I do. I don’t like taking second.

I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why

——–End

So, I suppose this is my plea to those of you out there that now how to enjoy the simple things of life. Help me slow down! Somebody tell me that it is OK to not have to rush through life. And gosh darn it… would you please hurry up and tell me what it is? Because, “I’m in a hurry to get things done!”

Mascots… from 0 to 90

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — donosmond @ 2:19 am

Who ever said having a camera on your phone is a pointless application? Apparently, they have never needed a camera at a moments notice…

So, I was driving home from work yesterday and saw something I’ve never seen before outside of a stadium – a mascot driving +90 mph on the freeway.

Here’s the proof!

The Johnny and Marie Show

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — donosmond @ 4:02 am

It only seems fitting that I rally the troops in on this one.

As some of you may (or may not) be aware, my aunt is on this season’s Dancing with the Stars. I will admit, I’ve never been much of a fan of the show; however, despite my differences I’ve begun watching it.

I’m a bit captivated. (There. You have my confession.)

Now, as cheesy as it may be to ask for all y’all’s (that’s Utahan for “everyone’s”) vote for Marie, I figured it would be best to invite you to watch the show once, or maybe twice – Oh, heck! Watch the whole dang season…

And if by chance you feel inspired (nay, compelled!) to vote for Marie, it would be greatly appreciated. I’m sure the multitudes of Osmond’s would shower you with thanks. :)

My friends tell me, “Don, I think you’re a little addicted to the blogging.”

Personally, I’ve tried to deny the fact that I have an addiction; however, “I’m gonna have to face it, I’m addicted to blog.”

A Web site was sent my way one afternoon with the request to take the “addicted to blogging” quiz. Well, the results are in, and this is what I’ve found out…

Try to Take Over the World

Filed under: Musing and Writing Projects — Tags: — donosmond @ 5:22 pm

Sometimes the thought, “What am I going to do today?” pops into my mind.

And in answer to my rhetorical question, I refer back to my childhood days of watching Saturday morning cartoons. One in particular is Pinky and the Brain. In the words of Brain – Same thing (I) do every (day); try to take over the world.”

It is during these moments of reflection I realize everything I have done, I am doing, and I will continue to do is for the sole purpose of secretly taking over the world. (ha ha ha) After all, isn’t there a song called, “I’ve got the whole world in my hands.” And why not… isn’t that what Donald actually means? World Ruler?!?

All right, all jokes aside. Here’s a thought for you, and it comes from a man whom I trust. “Do not let the actions of others dictate the path you take. For you are the captain of your ship.”

You truly have the whole world in your hands…

Peace, Love and Rock on!!!!

Discombobulated Reading

Filed under: Musing and Writing Projects — Tags: — donosmond @ 9:04 pm

We’ve all read the mass e-mail before. But in case you haven’t, here it is again:

Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Here is my question: If reading words in a jumbled format doesn’t make a difference for the human mind, then why spend so much time teaching how to write appropriately? Should we just rather say to a budding student, “It’s OK you’ve misspelled the word. At least you’ve used all the correct letters.”

PS. I did a little research on the abovementioned claim regarding Cambridge University. Turns out it cannot proven, nor debunked this study actually took place. However, Languagehat, a popular language blog, seems to have bee the source of disseminating this interesting enigma.

Overheard in Draper, UT

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — donosmond @ 12:23 pm

Picture this: Del Taco; lunchtime as the typical clientèle hustle in. A motley crew of body shapes jockey for position in line, while others scope out prime real estate leaving an understood “no vacancy” sign at each table.

A typical, middle age gentleman wearing an oversized Harley Davidson shirt approaches a table of octogenarians just as a youthful family is leaving the establishment.

Gentleman: Nice family you’ve got there.

Male Octogenarian: Thank you. That’s my granddaughter there. She’s 18 and getting married next week.

Gentleman: Is the young man worthy of her?

Male Octogenarian: Oh yes! He’s a return missionary.

Gentleman: Well, that’s half the battle.

Going for Gold

Filed under: Day in the Life of... — donosmond @ 5:33 am

About a year ago, I was presented an opportunity to start bobsledding. However, I chose to move to New York for a year, which I do not regret. (Nothing but love to New York friends.) It postponed my training of course, but now that I’ve moved back to Utah it’s back to the gym.

I started my training about a month ago, and I’m totally looking forward to it. I’ll be training with Team Holm Racing, a racing leader for eight years.

What I’m most excited about is taking hairpin turns at 80 mph. I’ve been told that you pull about 2-3 G-forces. Love it!

The only thing I’m a little concerned about is the uniform – that thing is skin tight. Leaves little to the… well, you get the idea. I suppose it’s just more motivation for the gym. Geesh! Something is wrong with me; I’m concerned about my figure. Isn’t that more of a feminine characteristic?

Bring on the 2010 Olympics!
